The First Beatitude
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for their’s is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3
“Blessed are those who are poor in material learning, because they will have less to unlearn before gaining the true understanding of Life eternal.” William Walter, The Unknown God, p 30.
I’ve just about stopped listening to the news NPR lately. It has always struck me of the best reporting around, and covered issues that the networks or cable news don’t cover; but lately (since I began taking metaphysics seriously) I’ve become aware of their strong coverage of medical issues. I guess I never paid much attention in the past, but now whenever it comes on, I turn off the radio. I just don’t want that kind of information running around in my brain; it’s just more to deal with than I already have. I don’t want information that reinforces an old belief in a material creation.
Sometimes, less is more.
The Origin of Evil
I was captivated this morning reading this passage from William Walter…
It ought to be apparent to all, that only an evil consciousness or sense, could bring forth an evil thing or condition. The individual mentality allows or entertains evil in thought or sense, and later, through mistakenly viewing the evil as real, it gives embodiment to the evil held in thought, either through action, feeling or form, according to the nature of the thought entertained. Right there lies the origin of all the evil of the universe.
God, being conscious good, could not bring forth evil, yet with our mentality being creative, we bring it forth ourselves. We either passively (allow) or intentionally (entertain) evil in our thoughts or feelings (our sense). Then Walter indicates there is a delay while the evil thought or feeling is processed–a moment of decision on our part where we either reject the appearance of evil or conclude it is real.
If we conclude that the evil is real, it then is embodied in “action, feeling or form,”–a sinful action, a disturbed feeling or mental state, or a state of inharmony in our body (disease, illness, etc).
We need then to watch our thoughts carefully. We may not always be able to avoid thoughts of evil, but we can avoid the conclusion that the evil is real and natural. As Walter continues,
However, as the evermore reality is only good, the evil can be but a seeming, though clothed with a false sense of reality by the causative action of the individual mentality. Evil is not, and can never be a verity. It is from first to last but the action, feeling or form of false sense, and the evil objective thing or condition is the false sense objectified.

If I was enlightened; If I knew deep down that my mind was the cause of my experience; If I really understood that the only reality is good; If I really understood the Truth that God is the only cause and creator, how would I think and act about my current problems?
Raising Consciousness
When we once gain the correct viewpoint and later, the actual understanding that all objective things are the result or effect of mind activity, and because of this, are but mental phenomena, then we can have some assurance that we can change this mental phenomena through mental means alone. William W. Walter
This passage reminds me of the scene in one of the Star Wars movies where Luke Skywalker is training with Yoda. Yoda has Luke trying to raise his spaceship from the swamp where it was submerged when he landed. All of the effort that Luke was applying was shown in his face as he struggled to lift a material object with his mind. Yoda however had no difficulty because he understood that he wasn’t dealing with a material object, but a mental phenomena.
Now I know that this is my own interpretation, but I think it is a metaphysically sound one. The solution to our problems is not to fight against a material, physical condition, but to correct the thinking that is manifesting as the problem. We are not raising a spaceship, but our consciousness.
Health Challenges
I’ve been emailing with my new teacher about my skin problems–actually all my health problems. Since I moved up her to Tennessee in 1996, I’ve developed allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, anemia, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and have put on an extra 100 pounds. None of these were a problem before the move.
In looking at the cause of my inharmony, what immediately came to mind was my relationship with my ex-wife. She was abusive to me, both emotionally and physically, and I was finally terrified of her. Even more than 10 years since our divorce, I wince each time the phone rings, afraid that it’s her.
As Rusty explains it,
1) Ill experience comes from ill feeing
2) Ill feeling comes from having drawn unsatisfying or erring conclusions that are contrary to natural law and fact (even though you’ve done it innocently.)
3) Erring conclusions come from judging (or reasoning) from an unsound basis (usually from judging by appearances) – quite simply – a misunderstanding.
Needless to say, I’m very interested in putting this whole issue to bed, and will be blogging my progress.
Right thinking allows no substitute. Intelligence is supreme and the only real good, and must be understood and adhered to. From The Bible, by William W. Walter, p 11.
