The inflammation or condition which we believe produces the pain doesn’t go away. The inflamed organ or tissue, the nerves which we are told communicates the sensation, and the brain which we believe registers the suffering have not changed.

What has changed is consciousness.

It must be then that the suffering exists only in that consciousness—otherwise, the suffering would continue even while we slept.

If we succeed in removing the suffering in consciousness, we have removed it from the only place it actually exists, and that’s what Christian Science is able to do.

The poor in Spirit

Theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Those whose vessels are full cannot be given anything more. The empty can be filled.

They that mourn

They shall be comforted

Those who are grieved that they are not as close to God as they would like. Those who mourn their lack of understanding. Those who grieved that they have not yet demonstrated the power of God.

The meek

They shall inherit the earth

It is the longsuffering that will be victorious. Those who are willing to carry the cross until they demonstrate. The spiritual journey is a long-distance race, not a sprint to the finish.

Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness

They shall be filled

Those who yearn for all things to be right and to manifest goodness and perfection.

The merciful

They shall obtain mercy

Those who “do unto others”—who refuse to judge and criticize others—who view all men as God’s reflection.

The pure in heart

They shall see God

Those who are committed to living spiritually—who continually and in all things turn to God for help rather than matter

The peacemakers

They shall be called the children of God

Those who practice Christian Science, working to establish peace, healing and harmony in the world

Those who are persecuted

Theirs is the kingdom of heaven

Those who do not waver in their spiritual practice because of opposition or disagreement

Do stuff more efficiently and make fewer mistakes by acting like you are teaching someone how to do it. For example, if I’m painting my living room, I imagine I’m showing someone else the right and wrong things to: preventing drips and bubbles, how to prepare the room, etc. This helps me to be less sloppy when I’m doing things because when you teach someone how to do something you want them to do it right (and you tend to move a bit slower). If you pretend, in your mind, that you’re teaching someone then you, too, will be more likely to do it right and make fewer mistakes.

Think of what it can mean when we explain to an imaginary other the Truth about any situation. That’s a divine idea.

If you’re not familiar with the tenets, here they are:

1. God is absolute good, everywhere present.
2. Human beings have a spark of divinity within them, the Christ spirit within. Their very essence is of God, and therefore they are also inherently good.
3. Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking. Everything in the manifest realm has its beginning in thought.
4. Prayer is creative thinking that heightens the connection with God-Mind and therefore brings forth wisdom, healing, prosperity, and everything good.
5. Knowing and understanding the laws of life, also called Truth, are not enough. A person must also live the Truth that he or she knows.

During the sensual ages, absolute Christian Science may not be achieved prior to the change called death, for we have not the power to demonstrate what we do not understand. But the human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept lovingly to-day, and to abandon so fast as practical the material, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual.

We must:

• accept the task (and the need) of changing our thought and beliefs to reflect the Truth of being. (And yes, we can change our beliefs!)
• abandon as fast as practical the material. (We can’t give up food yet, but we can begin identifying substance as spiritual. We can turn to Spirit first, before we turn to medicine. We can abandon our view of life as being rooted in a material body and begin to know ourselves as God’s image and likeness.)
• work out the spiritual. And where do we begin to do that? In our thinking, of course. And our consciousness is what determines our “outward and actual” experience.

In this class our textbooks will be Emma Curtis Hopkins’ book, Scientific Christian Mental Practice and the Bible, but other books will be brought in to the discussion as well, especially Mary Baker Eddy’s Christian Science Textbook, Science and Health with Keys to the Scripture.

God can do anything, you know—far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.   Eph 3:20 (MSG)

The more I go around with resentment, the more I’ve got it. It’s as simple as that. It’s a false view of life and it hides eternal harmony. If it didn’t happen in divine Mind and God is all, then where did it happen? That’s a false view of life—that there’s a past. But it’s all within our domain of control. If you make it real—if you’re going to say “It happened and you’re not going to tell me it didn’t happen,” you will have it.

If you look to the future, how many of us have been caught being anxious about the future, whether it be of your own finances, your country, or whatever? What good does it do to be fearful and to be anxious about the future? It’s one of those false views that’s hiding eternal harmony, and it’s the very thing that produces the ills of which we complain.

We go back to "take the water of life freely." That addresses this thought in the back of our mind, "Oh that’s too hard. It’s nice to talk about it, but really to do it? It just doesn’t happen!" Who says that? That is the voice of aggressive mental suggestion. It’s not your thought. It’s certainly not from God. It’s an aggressive mental suggestion sitting on your shoulder saying, "I am afraid about the future."

We need to get the hang of this and see that the thing that says, "I," is not you at all, but is this aggressive mental suggestion. Doesn’t Mrs. Eddy say the only intercommunication is from God to man? and God would never say that. So we can start sorting through our thoughts from that standpoint. Would God say something like, "I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future?
